Immune Deficiency
Immune deficiency occurs when the immune system is unable to fight off infection because it does not function properly or is missing a vital part. The list of causes is extensive, but most cases are attributed to secondary factors such as age, nutritional status, and medications. A primary immune deficiency is when a person is born with a genetic defect.
The consequences of either type of immune deficiency include increased risk of opportunistic infections and cancer. An immunologic workup may be indicated if you have recurrent, persistent, or severe infections. Age appropriate screening and evaluation per current guidelines are performed in our office.
